2014 Irish BMX National Series – Round 3

May 14, 2014

On a weekend when cycling was at the forefront of everybody’s mind with the Giro d`Italia being held only down the road from Ratoath. Ratoath BMX had their own ideas how their bikes where going to be a part of this special weekend with over 74 riders turning up to race mostly without tights or Lycra but with a passion for the sport they love.

It promised to be a wet 11th of May but Shay McNally had his own view on the whole thing and delayed the start till 1 pm. As some people may know Shay has a direct link to the BIG MAN above, and true to his word the rain stopped about 12ish and the track started to dry up and the racing starting  at 1 pm.

The young guns kicked it all off the the under 6 Boys and Girls hammering down the first straight it was a close battle all day, in the end Alex Waller took the win followed by Callum, Evan, Carly and Luke. Next up the Boys 7-8 Corey was unbeatable all day Callum was clipping at his heals all day and once he keeps up the hard training he should be catching him soon, James and Charlie had their own little battle for third all day with Daire, Tommy, and Scott very close behind.

Next up Boys 9-10 great racing to watch hats off to them but in the end there can only be one winner it was Ryan Quinn, closely followed by Lee O Sullivan then Arron Masterson Weir, Calvin Dunne (Team Summit), Jake Nally, Ruben Byrne and Eoin Williams.

The Boys 11-12 was split into two groups of motto’s with the guys having a great battle 11 riders in total one of the bigger groups of the day, Daniel Barker took the win Morgan the rocket 2nd Jack Larkin 3rd  then Alex Nally, Ronan Phibbs,Darragh Connor, Adam Jackson (kings N” Leon) Cian O Sullivan, Shane Rowe, Zach Costello and Luke Kennedy.

Next it was Boys 13-14 you could almost hear their voices breaking going down the first straight, Lee Byrne started his day off with a big crash and a trip to A & E. Leon Curley took the win, Mathew Campbell (Reconcile Racing) 2nd, Jason Rowe 3rd, followed by Sean Carroll.

Next up the Boys & Girls  15 + In this group we saw the guys who train almost every week to improve their BMX skills and it showed Eoin Corrigan could not be caught all day and I’m sure the move to superclass is not very far away, Adam Fynes came in second, Patrick one footed Bradley 3rd, then David (don’t scratch my new bike) Dorney, Jake (Junior cert) Campbell, Brian Go-Pro Gillen, Katie (brake dancer) O Neill, Eric (I want to Jump) Kileen, Tom Gordon and Ruairi Murphy.

Now it was the Girls turn the  U7 had just 3 riders having a great battle Chloe Steacy held the lead to the end closely followed by Chloe Byrne and Skyla Nally. Girls 8-10 was won by Shauna Byrne, 2nd was Alannah Carolan, 3rd was Aoife Murtagh.

The last group of Girls 11-14 saw Abby Steacy take the win, Kate Larkin 2nd, Shauna Rowe 3rd and Ella Murtagh 4th. It was great to see so many Girls turning up racing and even mixing it with the boys in some of the groups as I always say bring your friends with you next time the more the merrier.

We now make way for the Vets 30 + Riders there was one rider who stood out from the rest yes that right Stephen Clancy I think it was his bright top, anyway Ian Hamilton showed he can still ride a BMX after all his years of trying and took max points for the day Joey O Neill took 2nd Tom (Cruiser) Campbell got 3rd then Jonathon Reid,Michael Wilson, Brian Smyth, Karl Clancy, and Stephen Clancy.

SUPERCLASS

Well the big guns turned up for the Superclass race all the way from the UK we had Joe Presswood (Route 55) who dominated the day taking the max points again, it would of been great to see Geronimo race but he had a big off in the 1st Motto and cracked two ribs (get well soon). Its fair to say the BMX Ireland’s hard work is paying off as we saw our own home grown BMXers taking over the podium from the older guys at last. Matthew Malone and Sam Murphy rode Brilliantly all day taking second and third, Ilmars Virsis 4th then Aaron (Cross up) Edwards, Eamonn Wyer, Jake (I squat) Lynch, John Ward, Steve Bell and Eugene Jackson.

Once again it was a great day thanks to all that played their part, big thanks to Shay McNally and his Crew, thanks to all the photographers who spent the day with us. log onto BMX Ireland web site to see more photos and up and coming events. Ratoath next event is their summer session starting Sunday the 25 May so why not pop down and see and feel the excitement for yourself .
